The project EXPANDED GLITCH: forging digital materiality explores experimental forms in blacksmithing and the materiality of digital tools - particularly spatial drawing in virtual reality- that are produced by digitized bodily expressions in space. Through this, we examine how “ glitches” — digital distortions and irregularities due to the technological limits— resonate with artisanal techniques and the physical effects of heat, force, and repetition, finding ways to translate this hybrid materiality into tangible forms. Within the framework of a 3 day workshop and collaborative exchange, we realised the sculptural statement furniture work EXPANDED GLITCH I (2024), designed to showcase experimental jewellery by GOZE. WS explored different movement drawing techniques, computational workflows and 3D scanning techniques in the process. In this project, digital tools function as a catalyst that opens new formal, technical and conceptual questions within the craft, rather just substituting or aiding in a production process.
