[v] r o o m o f r e q u i r e m e n t { 2021 } is an open access virtual space inviting a self-system reset, internal dialogue and new conversation with one’s context. It came into being after a long collaborative process, located between worlds and across geographies and it oresents a desire to create an accessible, remote virtual space through community. The artwork consists of a physical installation and VR work. In VR, one experiences a sculptural playground of objects, textures and sounds deriving from malta’s landscape of wild and shoreline plants, prompting the visitor to reflect on the island’s limited resources and shameless appropriation of the built environment. Digital islets of trash-architecture become the pathway through which one teleports to the [v] r o o m , which is there to serve as a vantage point for new perspectives.
Through a hybrid experience of the għansar and agave americana plants, the physical installation pushes the visitor to experience things that are necessarily situated in discomfort. Part of the pop-up exhibition v i r t u a l m i x i n g, the work attempts to challenge the status quo in virtual reality perception on the island, expressing a serendipitous connection to ‘new technologies’, beyond the world of gaming and commercial use.
