From the blueprint to the CAD program to artificially intelligent engines, architectural drawing is an expansive practice that continues to evolve today. As the practice of architectural drawing continues evolving, renowned architecture filmmakers Ila Bêka and Louise Lemoine argue that a more authentic representation of places is needed in the profession. With the extended possibilities of embodied CAD drawing in XR, 3D sketching offers a way to interact with space through the body. What if we could sketch, discuss and ideate architectural design ideas physically in space, directly on site? What spatial drawing methods can be used to interface with the existing?

Within this course, students learned how to navigate, sense and create spatially drawn ideas with a Mixed Reality headset, engaging in 3D sketching to explore an embodied approach to CAD drawing. With conscious gestures in space, we will draw with our self-presence, finding haptic and movement-driven intentionality, at the Bplus office space in San Gimigniano Lichtenberg, Berlin. This site offers a rich narrative from which to draw from and be inspired by for functional interventions on site.

With today’s technologies, we can stretch between the physical and the digital world and get in contact with hybrid materialities. We can enter a 3D model space and touch our sketches and design ideas directly, navigating places in an embodied, multi-sensory way. Within this course, students also learn to explore a design in progress in contact with materiality, going beyond representation. The course first features a series of situated sketching sessions focused on Material Textures and a series of technical sessions focused on processing drawings with Rhino and Grasshopper. Besides on-site spatial drawing, students also learn how to process sketches efficiently and handle the data using computational scripts on Rhino and Grasshopper. For presentation, we will work with animation, meshes and plug-ins like Human and Weaverbird in the program.
